A number is perfect if it equals the sum of its proper divisors (all divisors except itself) But why did this simple arithmetic property inspire such fascination? The Pythagoreans: Harmony in Numbers (6th Century BCE) The ancient Greek Pythagoreans believed that numbers were the fundamental building blocks of the universe. To them, 6 wasn't just mathematically interesting—it was cosmically significant . Why did the Pythagoreans venerate the number 6? The world was created in 6 days (in religious tradition) 6 = 1 + 2 + 3, representing the union of the first three numbers 6 = 1 × 2 × 3, showing both additive and multiplicative harmony Its divisors (1, 2, 3) are in perfect proportion: 1:2:3 (the musical intervals!)
