Burgers' Equation
PDEs · Axiom Academy
The simplest nonlinear PDE - where waves travel at their own amplitude 1 The Equation: Nonlinear Transport Burgers' equation is the simplest nonlinear PDE. Unlike the linear transport equation where waves move at constant speed, here the wave speed depends on the amplitude itself! 2 Physical Interpretation: Wave Speed = Amplitude In Burgers' equation, the wave speed at any point is exactly equal to the value of u at that point. This creates fascinating behavior that doesn't occur in linear equations. 3 Different Parts Travel at Different Speeds Watch how a smooth wave profile evolves. The peak travels faster than the edges because it has higher amplitude. This causes the wave to deform over time. 4 Wave Steepening: Smooth Data Develops Sharp Gradients Starting from perfectly smooth initial data, the nonlinear term causes the wave profile to steepen. The back of the wave catches up to the front, creating increasingly sharp gradients. 5 Characteristic Crossing: Preview of Shock Formation Characteristics are curves along which information travels. In Burgers' equation, characteristics are straight lines with slopes determined by the initial data. When characteristics cross, a shock wave forms! You've explored the fascinating behavior of Burgers' equation, the gateway to nonlinear PDEs!
