Division with Remainders

Pre-Algebra · Axiom Academy

EXAMPLE Division with Remainders Let's work through 357 ÷ 8 using long division, one step at a time. Divide 357 by 8 using long division. We want the quotient (how many whole times 8 fits) and the remainder (what is left over). Set up: divisor 8 outside, dividend 357 under the bar. Final result: 44 remainder 5 . Nice work — you carried all the way through long division to 44 remainder 5 . The moves repeat every cycle: Set up: divisor outside, dividend inside the bracket. Work left to right through the dividend, one or two digits at a time. Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down — then repeat with the next digit. The remainder is what's left once every digit has been used. Check it: the original number, here . The remainder must always be smaller than the divisor. If your remainder is larger than or equal to the divisor, you can divide one more time.
