Number of trials until the first success A random variable X follows a Geometric distribution with parameter p if: Independent trials are performed until first success Each trial has probability p of success X counts the trial on which first success occurs Parameter: 0 < p ≤ 1, Support: k = 1, 2, 3, ... To get first success on trial k, we need k-1 failures followed by 1 success: The Geometric distribution is the only discrete distribution with the memoryless property:
