What to Expect in the Heart of Algebra Algebra is not just one topic—it's a collection of skills you'll use throughout the SAT Math section. Understanding linear relationships, solving equations, and interpreting functions are foundational to success. The SAT tests your understanding of these algebra topics. Here's how they break down: Solving for x in one or two variables Finding where two lines intersect Solving and graphing inequalities Interpreting slope and y-intercept Distance from a point on a line Translating English to equations The SAT uses different formats to test algebra. Here's what to expect: Most common format. You solve and pick the best answer. Student-Produced Response (Grid-in) You solve and enter your numerical answer on a grid. No negative answers, decimals go to 2 places. Some questions have two parts: part (a) and part (b). Your answer to (a) might feed into (b). Translate real-world scenarios into equations, then solve. Context Matters: Questions often hide algebra inside word problems. Read carefully. Multiple Solutions: Systems can have 0, 1, or infinite solutions. Know the difference. Graphing: You might need to interpret a line on a graph or understand what slope means. Substitution Strategy: Often, picking a number or substituting a value is faster than algebraic manipulation. Time Management: Algebra questions range from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. Harder problems take longer—that's normal. This unit is organized to build your skills progressively:
