Common Traps and How to Avoid Them
SAT Math · Axiom Academy
Common SAT Math Traps to Avoid Learn the sneaky tricks the SAT uses and how to avoid falling for them Why Understanding Traps Matters The SAT doesn't just test your math knowledge—it tests how carefully you read and think. Test makers intentionally include answer choices that are correct calculations but not the answer to the question being asked. By learning to recognize these patterns, you'll avoid losing points on questions you actually know how to solve. You calculate a value correctly, but the question asks for a different form of that value (like 2x the value, or half the value). ± Trap 2: Misreading Negative Signs A tiny negative sign can change everything. Missing or misinterpreting a negative sign is one of the easiest mistakes to make. Trap 3: Forgetting Units or Changing Them The question asks for meters, but your calculation gave centimeters. Or you calculated the radius when the question asked for diameter. Trap 4: Overthinking Simple Problems Not every SAT problem requires a complicated solution. Sometimes the straightforward approach is correct, and overthinking leads you away from the right answer. ➕➖ Trap 5: Sign Errors in Arithmetic Operations Distributing negatives incorrectly or making careless sign errors when adding/subtracting negative numbers is surprisingly common. Interactive Challenge: Spot the Trap Now it's your turn! Read each question carefully and identify which trap is being set. Then select the correct answer.
