SAT-Style: Multi-Shape Area Problems Composite figures are just shapes you add or subtract SAT area questions rarely give you a single clean shape. The trick is to break a figure into rectangles, triangles, and circles you already know — then add the pieces or subtract a hole. Keep symbolic unless the question asks for a decimal. Example 2 — An L-Shaped Region Example 3 — Rectangle Plus a Semicircle Label each simple shape, find its area, then add or subtract. The only place to slip is the circle radius — when a circle is inscribed or sits on a side, the diameter usually equals a side length, so halve it before squaring.
