Making Predictions

Statistics · Axiom Academy

Discover how one variable can help you predict another. Here's data on study hours and test scores for 8 students. Plot these points on the graph by dragging them from below. Use the sliders below to draw a line through the data. Try to get it as close as possible to all the points. Now let's use the line to make predictions! Adjust the slider to see what score we'd predict for different study hours. Our predictions won't always be perfect. Let's compare predicted scores to actual scores for our students. When two variables are related, knowing one helps us predict the other. The strength and direction of this relationship can be measured and visualized. The regression line captures the overall trend in data. Its equation has the form , where is the slope and is the y-intercept. Predictions are never perfect, but they're valuable! Understanding prediction errors helps us assess how much we should trust our model. From business forecasting to scientific research, prediction models help us make data-driven decisions in countless fields.
