Sample vs Population

Statistics · Axiom Academy

Why can't we just study everyone? Let's find out! Step 1: Meet the Whole Population Imagine we want to know the average height of all 1,000 students at Lincoln High School. Click on different students to see their heights! ⏱ Step 2: The Real-World Challenge Let's compare what it would take to measure the entire population versus a sample. Click each button to see the difference! Now let's take a random sample and see how close we get to the true population average. Adjust the sample size and take multiple samples! Step 4: When Sampling is Essential Some situations make sampling not just convenient, but absolutely necessary: The complete group we want to learn about. It includes every individual or item of interest. A subset of the population that we actually measure. When chosen randomly, it can represent the whole population remarkably well! Populations give perfect accuracy but are often impractical. Samples give approximate accuracy but are fast, affordable, and sometimes the only option!
