LESSON Probability Basics Review Essential concepts in probability: sample spaces, events, and fundamental rules The sample space (S) is the set of all possible outcomes of an experiment. An event (E) is any subset of the sample space. The probability of an event E is the ratio of favorable outcomes to total outcomes. For any event: The complement of event E (denoted E' or E c ) consists of all outcomes in S that are NOT in E. The complement rule provides an easy calculation: For any two events A and B, the probability that A OR B occurs (their union) is given by the addition rule :
