Discover how pushes and pulls combine to move objects. Explore the natural geometry of forces! A force is a push or pull that has both strength (magnitude) and direction . Breaking Forces into Components Any diagonal force can be broken into horizontal and vertical parts. This is where trigonometry comes in! When forces balance perfectly, the object doesn't move. This is called equilibrium . Try creating balanced forces! Forces are vectors – mathematical objects with both magnitude and direction. Understanding how they combine and how to break them into components is fundamental to physics, engineering, and mathematics. When you broke forces into horizontal and vertical components, you used the fundamental trigonometric relationships: x = r cos(θ) and y = r sin(θ) . This is the bridge between angles and distances! Vector analysis is everywhere: calculating forces on bridges, predicting projectile motion, designing aircraft, analyzing electrical circuits, computer graphics, game physics, and robotics. Trigonometry gives us the tools to work with these vectors mathematically.
