LESSON Wave Interference Simulator Discover how sound and light waves interact through interference—and how product-to-sum formulas reveal the mathematics behind beats and patterns. When two waves meet, they don't bounce off each other—they combine ! This phenomenon, called interference , creates beautiful patterns in sound, light, and water. Two simple sine waves combine to create complex interference patterns . Let's explore how this works! Adjust the frequencies of two waves and watch them interfere. Notice how different frequency combinations create different patterns! When two waves have slightly different frequencies , they create a pulsing pattern called beats . Musicians use this to tune instruments! If two tuning forks produce 440 Hz and 444 Hz, what beat frequency do you hear? The interference pattern we see is explained by a powerful trigonometric identity: the product-to-sum formula . We can rewrite this using the product-to-sum formula: Beat envelope: cos((f₁-f₂)πt) creates the amplitude modulation Carrier wave: sin((f₁+f₂)πt) is the rapid oscillation Beat rate: The difference frequency |f₁ - f₂| determines how often the wave pulses What we see/hear: A wave that gets louder and quieter periodically Product-to-sum formula reveals the structure Wave interference and beat frequencies appear everywhere in science and technology: Musicians tune instruments by listening for beats. When two strings produce beats, they're out of tune. Zero beats = perfect tuning!
