LESSON Exam Format — 66 Questions, 170 Minutes, No Calculator Understanding the structure, pacing, and constraints of the test The GRE Mathematics Subject Test is a single 170-minute session with 66 multiple-choice questions. There is no calculator allowed —not even a scientific one. Everything is done by hand or mental math. This immediately tells you something: the test values mathematical insight and technique over computational brute force. No calculator means you cannot rely on numerical approximations. The test either asks for exact answers or heavily emphasizes conceptual understanding. Step 2: Question Format and Structure All 66 questions are multiple choice with 5 options each (A, B, C, D, E). Questions are presented in a single 170-minute session—no breaks between sections, though you can use 1 minute of your test time as a break if needed. The test does NOT adapt to your performance. Every test-taker receives the same questions in the same order. The test is heavily weighted toward calculus and linear algebra. Here's the approximate breakdown: Calculus (single and multivariable): ~40% of questions Linear Algebra: ~20% of questions Real Analysis: ~15% of questions Abstract Algebra (groups, rings, fields): ~12% of questions Complex Analysis: ~8% of questions Other (topology, combinatorics, etc.): ~5% of questions This means a strong performance on calculus and linear algebra can carry your score significantly. These are your target areas for maximum improvement.
