LESSON Question Triage — Knowing What to Skip Strategic question selection and when to move on On a no-calculator standardized math test, you face a hard truth: you cannot afford to attempt every question carefully. Some questions will take too long relative to your payoff. Triage: Rapidly categorize each question as "Do Now," "Do Later," or "Skip." This happens in the first 30 seconds of reading a question. You must develop a gut sense for which problems are solvable for you in a reasonable time. • You recognize the concept instantly (e.g., "Find the derivative of f(x) = x³ + 2x") • The setup is straightforward with no trick • You can sketch a solution path in 20 seconds • You're confident you won't make an error Straightforward limit evaluation using L'Hôpital's rule Eigenvalue computation for a 2×2 matrix Identifying whether a series converges by a basic test Computing a partial derivative These typically account for ~16 questions on the test. They should collectively take 20-24 minutes. • The concept is familiar but the setup is unfamiliar • It requires multiple steps and you need to think • It's slightly tricky but you've solved similar problems • You estimate 2.5-3.5 minutes of work An optimization problem requiring setup and careful calculation A line integral where you need to parameterize carefully An ODE where the solution method isn't immediately obvious A linear algebra problem with a twist
