REAL WORLD Distance Calculations How do emergency services find the shortest route to save lives? Discover the power of the Pythagorean theorem in calculating distances. Imagine you're a dispatcher at Emergency Services. A 911 call comes in from someone at City Park. Your ambulance is at the hospital. You need to find the quickest route to save precious time. Looking at your city map, you can see two possible routes: Route A: Drive 3 miles east, then 4 miles north (following the streets) Route B: A direct diagonal path through the city Route A clearly takes 3 + 4 = 7 miles . But what about the diagonal route? Could it be shorter? Let's explore how the distance changes as we vary the horizontal and vertical components of the journey.
